Bartender kits — shaker, jigger, strainer, spoon, and muddler in one box, usually with a stand to keep them off the counter.

How to choose

  • Cobbler or Boston — A cobbler shaker strains through its own cap. A Boston set is two tins and needs a separate strainer. The itemised contents tell you which you are getting.
  • Piece count — Count the tools you will actually use. A larger set is not a better one if half of it stays in the stand.
  • Jigger markings — Check whether the measures are in ounces or millilitres, and whether the sizes match the recipes you follow.
  • Stand — Wood, metal, and wall-mounted. Check the footprint against the counter you have.
